Event information:
1. The three kyu divisons shall be consolidated into two: U/G-5 kyu ‘Junior kyu’, and 4 kyu-1 kyu ‘Senior kyu’.
2. The dinner venue is ‘Three Mothers Thai’ in Civic. More details below.
ANUKC in association with the ACT Kendo Renmei cordially invites you to attend its 2013 Kendo seminar and Open Kendo Competition to be held on 21st and 22nd September. The focus of the weekend is to give Kyu grades the opportunity to develop their understanding and experience within a competition. It will also provide opportunity for senior Kyu grades and Dan grades to develop their shinpan ability.
To participate in this event you must be a registered member of the Australian Kendo Renmei (AKR) and register your intention to participate on the accompanying spread sheet: Registration form (.xls ) Event information (pdf).
All entries must be lodged no later than COB Friday, 13 September to anukendo-executive@anu.edu.au
The weekend will include the following events:
- ACT 3rd Sub squad training – Saturday 21st
- Kyu grade Kendo seminar – Saturday 21st
- ACT Open Individual Competitions – Sunday 22nd
- Combined Teams Competitions – Sunday 22nd (if time permits).
Kendo seminars
9:30am to 3:00pm Saturday, includes 45 minutes for lunch and final keiko of 45 min
- ACT 3rd Sub squad training
This will include ACT squad members. Local and interstate and Dan grades are invited to join this training. Program shall be based on the National Team Coach’s 3rd Sub-Squad training requirements. Note that this is not intended to replace existing interstate sub-squad obligations – please check with your state facilitators.
- Kyu grade Kendo seminar
This seminar shall focus on practicing waza to develop a better understanding of yoku-datotsu: that is making a valid strike in matches, and how to judge points being scored in matches (for senior Kyu grades). The training session will cover:
- Fumi-komi and timing of cuts,
- Posture before and after cutting (zan-shin),
- Entering and leaving shia-jo,
- Match etiquette,
- Preparing for matches.
- Practice matches will be held in the afternoon session.
2013 ACT Open Kendo Taikai
Sunday 22nd – 9:30am to 3:00pm – lunch will be available but no break due to time restrictions
- Individual Events shall include:
- Junior kyu grade – ungraded, 6 & 5 kyu
- Senior kyu grade – 4 kyu – 1 kyu
- Junior dan grade – 1 and 2 dan
- Senior dan grade – 3 dan and above
Please note that:
- We have combined the intermediate and senior kyu divisions into a single devision, ‘Senior kyu’, comprising 4-1 kyu.
This is due to the demography of the entries. - Senior kyu grades shall help shinpan junior kyu events.
- Junior dan grades shall help shinpan all kyu events.
- Senior dan grades shall help shinpan all events.
- Junior grades are expected to help with time keeping, scoring and ribbons.
- Team Events shall include:
- Combined teams competition.
Please note that:
- This event shall be run if time permits.
- Teams of 5 shall be picked on the day from 2 pools based on kyu and dan grades.
- Kyu grades shall play kyu grades and dan grades shall play against dan grades.
- Kyu grades shall make up 1, 2, 3 & 4 places in team order and play in any of those 4 places.
- Junior dan grades shall make up places 5 and shall compete as taisho.
- This may change depending on attendance demographics.

Refreshments and Lunches
Tea, coffee and cordial will be available all weekend. Lunches (bento boxes) on both days will be served in the venue.

Time: from 6:30pm.
Dinner, should you wish to join us, will be informal with the option of selecting from a menu, or a $20 preset menu.
Please note, there is a minimum of $25 for both eftpos and credit card charges.
Bogu Storage
The building will be locked on Saturday night and kendo gear can be secured in the building at the Sport and Recreation Association. The ANU Kendo club will help take care of the gear, but assumes no responsibility for them.
