General information:
To participate at the Australian Kendo Championships you need to be an Australian Citizen or a Permanent Resident, and be a registered AKR member.
Kyu and Dan Teams are made up of 5 x competitors.
Women Teams are made up of 3 x competitors.
ACT, like all states is allocated 7 x Kyu and 7 Dan places for those individual events. Some states can not field these numbers so other states (primarily the host state) get to include additional competitors. However, ACT can not expect to get many more than it’s allocation.
Deadline for all forms and fees for competition and grading for the VKR/AKR are the 9th May. We have to have our forms and fees sorted out and finalised by Thursday 3rd May. Seminar & Championships $305.00 Championships Only $185.00 Seminar Only $130.00 The price of the championships also includes the bus ride from Kenshikan dojo in West Melbourne to Darebin Sports Centre in Reservoir.
Please be aware of the following important organisational points:
1) Only one application from each state will be accepted.
2) Only one cheque for all monies (comp, grading and seminar) will be accepted from each state.
3) All competitors must be seeded (according to state seedings) on the application form.
4) Deadline for submission of forms and monies is 9 May (a little over one month away). This is to allow the AKR Kendo Board time to check the draw and advise states whether they can enter more than the normal quota of competitors.
5) All competition registration and shinai checking will happen at the Kenshikan on FRIDAY 8 June. None will take place on the day of competition. To be eligible to compete, all competitors should have checked in themselves and their shinai the day before. We will accept one person submitting shinai on behalf of their team or state for cheking on the Friday.
6) A levy of $15.00 will be added to all entries to cover the cost of coaches to and from the venue. This cost blowout was unforseen, but after careful consideration it was decided that it is still money well-spent when compared with the incovenience of public transport, or the hassles and expense of organising own hire cars/buses. This way, everyone travels in comfort and in a timely manner to the venue together.
7) Lunches will not be provided on the days of competition. However a well-stocked kiosk will be operating at the venue for competitors to buy their own lunches and snacks. But we do get a 'free' water bottle and lots of fruit.
8) Accommodation is at KSK by $10 donation per night to MBK/KSK, or other nearby options as detailed on the website. There are no major events in Melbourne over that weekend so we have been advised that there should be plenty of beds available. We have chosen to have all options centrally located to save on the need for interstate visitors to hire their own transport. All accom locations are within walking/PT distance of each other.
There is a dinner on the Saturday night (Lygon St, East Brunswick) which is included in the comp fee.
-The three buses will leave from Kenshikan at 7.30am. They will leave the venue from 5.30pm onwards.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. My phone number is 0422 146 367. Otherwise I recommend using "reply all" so that other secretaries can be privy to your query. This may answer their questions as well. I look forward to seeing everyone at the championships, which I hope will the best yet!

Shimpan Seminar and AKR AGM at the Nationals
It has been the practise in recent years to hold a pre-competition shinpan
seminar on the afternoon of the Friday before the Championships (normally
Good Friday), and the Annual Meeting of Kendo Members later that same afternoon/evening.
While we have those events pencilled in for Friday 8 June, I need some
indication of how many people are intending to attend these two events.
Of course all members are encouraged to attend the Annual Meeting, while
the Shinpan Seminar is aimed at those offering to assist with Shinpan duties
during the Chamionship, although other members with basic shinpan experience
are also welcome to attend.
The proposed times are:
Shinpan Seminar: 1.30 - 3.30pm
Annual meeting of Kendo Members 4.00 - 6.00pm
The location will be the Kenshikan. Could I have one reply from each
state by this coming Friday 18 May, indicating how many of your members
are intending to attend each of these events. If we do not have sufficient
people attending, one or other of these events may be cancelled. Thank
you for your assistance in this matter.
Transport & carpooling, bogu transport:
There are a number of people driving down.
All competition registration and shinai checking will happen at the
Kenshikan on FRIDAY 8 June. None will take place on the day of competition.
To be eligible to compete, all competitors should have checked in themselves
and their shinai the day before. We will accept one person submitting
shinai on behalf of their team or state for checking on the Friday.
Details of carpooling, registering for competitors who can't get to Melbourne on Friday etc. to be posted.
Please let us know if you need a lift, bogu to be transported separately, shinai registration etc.
Registering by proxy:
Shinai weigh-in is at Kenshikan from 5-10pm on the Friday. Rebecca Marshall, David and Reika Cunningham will need to be registered by proxy - anyone else? - you will need to give your shinai to someone who can register on your behalf.
Accommodation:
Also Kenshikan are offering floor space to sleep at $10 per night (only 30 spots).
